临安卷 · Lin’an
From the source to the wharf: five short lives.
The three mountains are written in Landscape. This volume writes the water after it leaves the hills: the Source of Taihu, Zhexi Grand Canyon, Qingshan Lake, Zhinan Village, Heqiao Old Town. Source, lake and village run north to Lake Tai; canyon and town run west to the Qiantang. First what a place is and why it matters; only in the final line, when to go. Prices and routes change; water does not.

Northern Lin’an
One of Lake Tai’s first sources. The ravine is narrow, strung with clear pools and small falls — only at its end do you grasp that the vast lake begins as a thread of water like this.

Western Lin’an
A canyon follows the stream. Between dark pools and sheer walls, the green belongs to the water, not the trees. That is the Qiantang before it leaves the mountains. In summer the water runs highest, and you hear it before you see it.

Qingshan Lake
East of Lin’an town
A reservoir turned lake, metasequoia turned forest — trees rising straight from the water, reflections calmer than the trees. In late autumn the forest turns red, like a row of quiet fires on the water. The lake sits on the town’s east edge; the quiet is a kind the streets cannot give.

Zhinan Village
Eastern Lin’an
A village at nearly six hundred metres, ringed by more than three hundred old trees — people living at the height of the trees. In late autumn, ginkgo gold, maple red, terraces amber: the season people and trees keep together, not a view staged for outsiders.

Heqiao Old Town
Southwest Lin’an
The Changnan stream bends here, and the bend made a river-born old town. The old street still keeps its wharf-town layout — shops in front, river behind, steps down to the boats. The water slows, and the days slow with it.
