Yu laid down the high mountains and great rivers to tell the Nine Provinces apart. A province is landscape, not an administrative box. Jiuzhou takes mountains and rivers as its spine: one volume, one city, written slowly in the gazetteer tradition — not as an encyclopedia, but visited, read, and written one city at a time.
